5 Proven Benefits of Turmeric for Skin

One ingredient you should never forget when shopping for spices is turmeric.

Bright orange-yellow in colour, a light, complementary taste and smell of this popular Indian spice. It gives a nice golden color when added to milk and curry.

Turmeric is good for your health besides adding color and taste to your dishes. It can help improve cardiovascular health, increase digestive health, ease joint pain, increase blood circulation, prevent blood clots, delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, and, to name a few, improve your memory.

1.  Turmeric Cures Acne

Its antibacterial nature inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause acne. A study published in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin in 2013 reports that curcumin exhibits antimicrobial activity in turmeric that inhibits acne-causing bacteria from P. acnes .

It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce symptoms of acne.

Turmeric also has natural oil-controlled properties that help to reduce breakouts of acne.

Mix the same quantities of turmeric and honey and apply directly to the area affected by acne. Leave it at night. Rinse it with cool water the next morning. Do this once a day.

It has natural oil-controlled properties that can help control the secretion of excess oil (sebum). Turmeric fatty acids and phytosterols help to reduce excess skin oils.

A study published in the Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research in 2013 found that extract from turmeric plant rhizomes can be used in skin preparations to regulate excessive sebum secretion in people with acne and related problems (2).

To form a paste, combine 1⁄2 a teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of yogurt and fresh lemon juice. Apply on your face a even layer of the paste. Allow 30 minutes to sit down, then rinse with warm water. Twice a week, use this mask.

It helps to keep your skin protected from sun damage due to its skin-lighting and anti-aging properties.

Researchers analyzed the effects of a turmeric extract on chronic irradiation-induced skin damage in melanin-possessing hairless mice in a 2009 study published in Phytomedicine. They found that turmeric extract protected the skin against UV rays, prevented wrinkle formation, helped retain skin elasticity and reduced dark spots appearance .

Mix turmeric powder, lemon juice and raw milk with 1⁄2 teaspoon each. Apply throughout the affected area and wait for it to dry. Wash with cold water. Do that once a day.

4. Heals Wounds


Another study published in the 2015 West Indian Medical Journal analyzed the impact of turmeric cream on a cesarean section’s healing of wounds and found it promoting faster healing and even helping to reduce wound complications .

Mix 1⁄2 a tablespoon of turmeric in enough coconut oil to form a paste to promote wound healing. To reduce pain and prevent infection, apply it on the wound 2 or 3 times a day.
In a glass of hot milk, you can also mix 1 teaspoon of this powder and drink it every day for a few days before going to bed.
