5 Harmful Side Effects Of Sunscreen: How To Stay Safe

The majority of commercial sunscreens contain harmful substances such as oxybenzone, triclosan, parabens, and phthalates. These compounds can interfere with hormonal functioning, cause cell damage and mutation, and increase cancer risk. Try and find sunscreens that use titanium and zinc as the active ingredient as well as natural oils like coconut oil, shea butter, and carrot oil. Some sun exposure can also be beneficial to get the required amount of vitamin D.nal.

Whenever we expect to have even the slightest bit of sun exposure, most of us lather on sunscreen. And we are often told to do just that, as the risk of failing to do so is to contract skin cancer from UV exposure. New studies, however, appear to suggest that sunscreen can cause more harm than good.

Hormone Disrupts

Studies show that oxybenzone, triclosan, parabens, and phthalates are capable of disrupting hormone function. It is common to find these ingredients in commercial sunscreens. Studies have shown that when teenagers switched to cleaner products without these compounds, the levels of these chemicals in their systems dropped rapidly, making it worthwhile switching to products free of these chemicals.

Damages Cells

Oxybenzone is used because it absorbs UV light, a popular chemical in commercial sunscreens. It may, however, also cause hormone disruptions and potential cell damage.2 It also appears to inhibit cell growth and interfere with the synthesis of DNA process. This could potentially lead to genetic mutations. Studies in older women have associated oxybenzone with endometriosis. Women with higher oxybenzone levels during pregnancy had daughters with lower birth weight.

Promotes cancer cell growth

The damage done by these chemicals can cause cancer cell growth. The genetic mutations they cause can potentially lead to cancer.

Increases Risk Of Breast Cancer

Studies show that sunscreen chemicals called benzophenones can mimic the effects of excess estrogen in the body.5 This increases the risk of developing diseases such as breast cancer.

Promotes skin tumors and lesions

Retinyl Palmitate or Vitamin A Palmitate is a substance that is used in a number of skin care products because it is an antioxidant that reduces aging. Research, however, shows that rats treated with the formulation of vitamin A have shown a faster spread of skin tumors and lesions.

How to Choose The Right Sunscreen

Try to find sunscreens that do not contain the active ingredients mentioned above. Instead, try to find those that use minerals of titanium and zinc. These ingredients tend to create a physical barrier between the UV rays and your skin than a chemical barrier. The good news is that, unlike the chemical compounds mentioned above, these ingredients do not penetrate the skin.7 There are also plenty of natural sunscreens available that use ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter and carrot oil with their own natural SPF value.8 Just make sure the product you buy has a minimum SPF of 30.
